Roof lantern vs rooflight: what are the main differences?

With the warmer weather making an appearance, it’s time to shine a light into your home and create the ‘wow-factor’ with the aesthetically pleasing addition of a roof lantern or rooflight. To help you decide which one is best for you, let’s give you an overview of each glazed option.

What is a roof lantern?

Are roof lanterns a good idea? If you’d like a roof glazing system that is also a focal point, then a roof lantern is most definitely for you. An integral part of a large section of any roof, such as an orangery, roof lanterns can also be installed onto conservatories and flat roof extensions.

Featuring a pitched design, a roof lantern is an architectural structure on its own and a great choice for channelling light from all angles whilst creating a stunning aesthetically pleasing architectural show-stopper; saving on energy use and maximising comfort in your home.

Available in a wide variety of 150+RAL colours, from Grey Beige to Gloss White, and a selection of durable woodgrain foils, they can be specified as single or dual-coloured frames for the best customisation. This means that you can opt for a different colour on the outside of your rooflight and a different colour on the inside, perhaps Velour White to match your interior décor. Have a look at our technical documentation for a full list of the colour options for all our products.

Roof lanterns from Techniglaze are glazed with high-performance glass from one of three leading brands: Pilkington, Guardian, or Saint Gobain. Each company supplies a wide range of glazing options including energy-efficient glass, self-cleaning glass, textured/obscure glass, and solar control glass. No matter your requirement or personal preference, we are sure to have a glazing option to suit you. You can also rest assured that our glazing meets prestigious building regulations requirements for security, safety, and energy efficiency.

What is a rooflight?

A rooflight, on the other hand, is a glazed flat unit typically installed onto a flat roof, perfect for stargazing at night!  It is the perfect option for making your living space look much more spacious and open-plan – something we know our customers love – whilst maximising the amount of natural light for smaller living spaces without compromising the height of your roof with its minimalistic aluminium frame and hidden fixing system.

Subject to structural alterations, rooflights can also be retrofitted into an existing roof extension and loft conversions, as well as any new-build structures.

Available in a plethora of 150+ RAL colours, from Anthracite Grey to Antique Green, all of which are finished with a marine-grade powder coat and can be specified in a single or dual coloured option.

Aliver Rooflights from Techniglaze can accommodate glazing systems with a maximum thickness of 29 mm. As with roof lanterns, rooflights can be specified with a wide range of glazing types including solar control, self-clean and obscure glass; all of which meet the latest building regulations standards.

Which one should I buy, a roof lantern or a rooflight?

To round up, perhaps the biggest difference between a roof lantern and a rooflight is their appearance, both from an interior and exterior point of view. Flat rooflights are barely visible at a ground level whereas roof lanterns provide an impressive addition to the architecture of your property.

Historically roof lanterns were first used by the Victorians and therefore tend to be an architectural feature of older style properties, whilst rooflights are a more modern feature and therefore stylistically neutral no matter what property type you own.

Ultimately, however, it is down to your personal preference and the size of the space available. What we can guarantee with either option is that either a roof lantern or rooflight can let in up to three times more light than a conventional vertical window! No wonder both glazed products are firm favourites amongst our customers in Bath, Somerset, and the South West.

We are delighted with the windows, and have already been complimented by our neighbours on the upgrade.

Tyler and Paul were very professional and showed good initiative for the inevitable adjustments that needed to be made. They were particularly considerate of our house, it’s character and our pets! Please pass on our thanks and comments as appropriate.

We are delighted with the windows. As you know we were concerned that they would look different and more “clunky” but really you can’t tell the difference except that the new ones are not falling apart!!! The guys who did the fitting were also good. They were working in freezing fog, really cold but they carried on regardless, they were extremely tidy and cleared up after themselves.

Excellent customer service, range of products and attention to detail. I honestly can’t rate them highly enough. They stepped in and came to the rescue after Salisbury glass cost us 8 months of time and 100k in increased material costs.

These guys have been great to us. Helped us out at short notice after we were badly let down by another supplier. We asked for several minor details that were not standard (e.g. different locking mechanisms), and they were flexible and open to ideas. We ended up also commissioning our front door from them; it is super sturdy and beautiful. Always courteous, professional, and good payment terms.
